Peptide Payment Gateway: Connecting Your Store to an Acquirer That Accepts the Category

What a payment gateway does for a peptide store, why the gateway and the merchant account are two different things, and how to choose one that fits WooCommerce, Shopify or a custom checkout.

Gateway and merchant account are not the same thing

Most peptide merchants looking for a "payment gateway" actually need two things: a merchant account with an acquirer that accepts research-use-only suppliers, and a gateway that connects the store to that account. The gateway handles the technical work — capturing card data, tokenising it, running fraud checks, submitting the authorisation and reporting back. The acquirer decides whether you are allowed to process at all. A gateway on its own will not accept peptide volume; it has to be paired with an approved high-risk merchant account.

That distinction matters because many gateway brands advertise "high-risk" support but route to the same handful of acquirers. The practical question is never "which gateway" but "which acquirer will approve this catalogue, and which gateways does that acquirer certify".

What a peptide gateway needs to do well

  • Tokenisation and hosted fields. Card numbers should never touch your server. Hosted fields or a hosted payment page keep you in PCI DSS SAQ A scope and make the acquirer more comfortable.
  • AVS and CVV enforcement. For US cards, address verification and card-code checks are the primary fraud controls and most acquirers expect them switched on. 3-D Secure is used for European cards and optionally in the US.
  • Descriptor control. The gateway must pass the correct billing descriptor so cardholders recognise the charge. Descriptor mismatch is the single most common cause of avoidable disputes in this category.
  • Multi-MID routing. The ability to attach a second merchant account and route by rule (amount, country, BIN, retry on decline) protects you when one acquirer changes policy.
  • Alternative methods on the same checkout. ACH/eCheck, bank transfer and crypto should sit alongside cards, so that a card decline does not lose the order.
  • Velocity and fraud rules. Per-card and per-customer limits, geo-blocking for restricted states and countries, and device checks reduce friendly-fraud and reseller abuse.
  • Reporting and webhooks. Settlement, reserve and dispute data you can reconcile, plus webhooks for order status.

Integration routes

WooCommerce

Partner gateways typically provide a WooCommerce plugin that supports hosted fields, saved cards and refunds from the WordPress admin. Where the approved acquirer's gateway has no plugin, a redirect or hosted-page integration is used. Setup is usually a day once the merchant account is live. See the WooCommerce peptide payments guide.

Shopify

Shopify Payments excludes the category, and Shopify limits which third-party gateways a store can install. The usual options are a certified third-party gateway (where Shopify permits it for your products), a hosted payment page triggered from checkout, or a separate checkout domain. See the Shopify peptide payments guide.

Magento, BigCommerce and custom platforms

REST APIs with server-side SDKs, hosted fields via JavaScript, and webhook callbacks. Tokenise on the client, authorise from the server, store only the token. KLAUDE's developer overview describes the integration pattern we recommend.

Hosted checkout and pay links

A partner-hosted page removes almost all integration work and is the fastest way to go live. It also suits B2B and institutional orders that are invoiced rather than bought through a cart.

What the gateway cannot fix

A gateway does not change your category, your catalogue or your website. If product pages describe dosing, if the terms do not name a legal entity, or if the refund policy contradicts the checkout, no gateway configuration will get the merchant account approved. Fix the underwriting problems first — the free readiness review lists them — then choose the gateway that fits the acquirer that approves you.

How KLAUDE arranges it

We identify the acquiring partner with appetite for your profile, confirm which gateways that partner certifies, and recommend the one that fits your platform and growth plan. Where a backup MID is sensible, we set up routing from day one. The gateway contract is with the gateway provider; KLAUDE manages the relationship and the configuration.

Questions

Can I keep my current gateway and just add a peptide merchant account?

Sometimes. If the gateway is certified by the acquirer that approves you, the merchant account can be attached to it. If not, switching gateways is usually a day of work and worth it for a durable relationship.

Is a high-risk gateway more expensive?

Gateway fees themselves are modest — a monthly fee plus a few cents per transaction. The higher cost of peptide processing sits in the merchant account rate and reserve, not the gateway. See the fees guide.

Do I need 3-D Secure for US customers?

Not usually. US acquirers rely on AVS and CVV. 3-D Secure helps with liability shift on some disputes and is expected for European cards.

Can the gateway accept ACH and crypto as well as cards?

Many partner gateways support ACH/eCheck natively; crypto is usually a separate provider embedded on the same checkout. KLAUDE arranges both where appropriate.
