Peptide Payment Processing in the USA: Acquirers, Rules and Realistic Options

How US peptide merchants are underwritten: Visa and Mastercard US rules, FDA and FTC positions on research-use-only products, state restrictions, ACH, and which acquiring routes actually have appetite.

The US is the largest peptide market and the hardest to process in

Most research peptide demand is in the United States, most peptide suppliers are US entities, and most US acquirers refuse the category. That combination is why "peptide payment processing USA" is one of the most searched phrases in this niche and why so much of the advice online is wrong. This guide describes how US peptide merchants are actually underwritten and which routes have appetite.

The rules an acquirer applies to a US peptide merchant

Card-brand rules

Visa's Integrity Risk Program and Mastercard's BRAM programme require acquirers to register high-risk merchants, pay programme fees and monitor for prohibited activity. Research chemicals and unapproved pharmaceuticals are explicitly in scope. An acquirer that accepts a peptide merchant takes on registration, fees and liability, which is why only a limited number do and why they underwrite the catalogue line by line.

FDA and FTC

Research-use-only is a recognised product status, but it is incompatible with marketing for human use. The FDA treats a product as a drug based on intended use, which is read from labelling, product pages, FAQs and advertising, not from a disclaimer. The FTC acts on unsubstantiated health claims. Underwriters apply the same test: if any page implies human use, the product is an unapproved drug and the application is declined. Compounds that are FDA-approved drugs or in clinical development are declined on product review alone.

State restrictions

Several states restrict or prohibit specific compounds, and acquirers expect a restricted-state list at checkout. "Ships to all 50 states" with no exceptions is a red flag. A geo-block in the gateway, enforced at checkout, satisfies most acquirers.

Nacha rules for ACH

ACH and eCheck are governed by Nacha rules, not card-brand rules. Originators still underwrite the category, return-rate thresholds apply, and Regulation E gives consumers dispute rights, but the product-category barrier is lower than for cards. For many US peptide merchants ACH is the first method to go live.

Privacy and consumer law

A US-facing privacy policy should address CCPA/CPRA and the growing set of state privacy laws, name the payment processor, and describe any pixels or session recording. Subscription or auto-ship models fall under the FTC's negative-option rules and state auto-renewal laws; cancellation must be as easy as sign-up.

Acquiring routes with appetite for US peptide merchants

  1. US specialist high-risk acquirers and ISOs. A small number of US acquirers run programmes for research-use-only suppliers. Approval is for a narrowed, lawful catalogue with full documentation, and comes with a rolling reserve (typically 5–10%, 90–180 days), a monthly cap and a personal guarantee. This is the preferred route: domestic settlement in USD, US dispute handling, and the best long-term terms.
  2. Offshore acquiring. Acquirers in jurisdictions with broader risk appetite will take a US peptide merchant, sometimes through a non-US entity. Higher rates, larger reserves, cross-border fees and settlement in a foreign currency or via wire. A legitimate fallback, not a shortcut: the application must still be accurate, and the merchant still has to meet product rules.
  3. ACH / eCheck through a Nacha-compliant originator. Lower dispute exposure, no card-brand registration, often live in days. Priced per transaction. The practical bridge while card acquiring is arranged, and a permanent second rail afterwards.
  4. Crypto settlement. Lawful where offered, with the provider's own category rules and KYC. Useful for a minority of customers; not a replacement for cards.

What does not exist: a US aggregator that quietly accepts peptides, a "peptide-friendly Stripe", or a gateway that approves the category on its own. Anyone offering those is offering a temporary account.

What a US peptide application looks like when it is approved

  • A US LLC or corporation, EIN, registered agent and address, owners identified, business bank account in the entity's name
  • A catalogue of research-use compounds with true names, third-party COAs per batch and supplier documentation
  • A website with no human-use language, a restricted-state list, complete legal pages, a 21+ gate where appropriate and a business-buyer attestation at checkout
  • Processing history from any previous provider, disclosed in full, including terminations
  • A billing descriptor that matches the brand and a checkout that enforces AVS and CVV

Merchants that arrive at underwriting in this state are approved more often than not. Merchants that arrive without it are declined, and the decline is recorded. Questions

Does a US peptide merchant need a US acquirer?

Not necessarily, but a US acquirer gives domestic USD settlement, US dispute handling and better long-term terms. Offshore acquiring is a fallback when no US programme fits.

Can a non-US company sell peptides to US customers and get processing?

Yes, but the entity location, bank account and acquirer must align, and the same product and marketing rules apply to US customers regardless of where the seller is incorporated.

Is ACH safe for a peptide store?

ACH carries return and Regulation E dispute risk rather than chargeback risk. Return-rate thresholds are strict, so customer verification matters. For B2B buyers it is often the preferred method.

Which states restrict peptides?

Restrictions change and vary by compound. KLAUDE reviews the current position during the eligibility assessment rather than publishing a list that will be out of date; your gateway geo-block is then set accordingly.
