Peptide Payment Processing Fees: What High-Risk Acquiring Really Costs

Typical rate ranges for peptide merchant accounts, how rolling reserves and caps work, the fees that are easy to miss, and how pricing improves with clean history. Market ranges, not quotes.

Why peptide processing costs more

An acquirer that accepts research peptide merchants pays card-brand high-risk registration fees, carries higher scheme assessments, sets aside capital against chargebacks and monitors the account more closely than a standard retailer. Those costs are passed to the merchant as a higher discount rate, a reserve and a cap. The pricing is not a penalty; it is the price of being accepted in a category most acquirers refuse. It improves with history.

Everything below is a market range, not a KLAUDE quote. Pricing is set by each acquiring partner after underwriting, and KLAUDE never states a rate before a partner has issued terms.

Card acquiring: the components

Discount rate~4% – 8% per transactionLower end for US domestic acquiring with clean history; higher for offshore and new merchants

Rolling reserve5% – 10% of volumeHeld 90–180 days, released on a rolling basis; reviewable after ~6 months

Chargeback fee$25 – $100 per disputePlus the disputed amount if lost; fines above ratio thresholds

Early terminationVariesRead the agreement; some contracts run 12–36 months

Alternative methods

  • ACH / eCheck (US): flat fee per transaction (roughly $0.50 – $3) or ~1% – 2%, plus return fees. No card-brand registration. Return-rate thresholds apply.
  • Bank transfer / open banking (EU/UK): flat or low-percentage pricing; no chargebacks.
  • Crypto settlement: ~1% – 2% with conversion to fiat; provider KYC and category rules apply.

The costs that are easy to miss

  • Reserve as working capital. A 10% reserve for 180 days on $100,000 monthly volume means up to $60,000 of your money held at any time. Model it before signing.
  • Caps that stall growth. An initial cap of, say, $50,000 a month is normal; exceeding it triggers holds. Plan the increase request at month three.
  • Platform surcharges. Shopify adds a transaction fee when Shopify Payments is not used; some platforms charge for third-party gateways.
  • Chargeback programme fines. Exceeding ratio thresholds puts the merchant into a card-brand monitoring programme with monthly fines that dwarf the discount rate.
  • Termination economics. A terminated account holds the reserve for the full period and makes the next account more expensive. The cheapest processing is the account that stays open.

How pricing improves

Six months of processing under the chargeback threshold, stable volume and no product-review issues is the normal point to renegotiate: reserve reduced or released, cap raised, rate trimmed. A second merchant account adds negotiating leverage. KLAUDE schedules these reviews as part of the relationship rather than leaving them to the merchant.

Comparing offers

Compare on effective cost: discount rate plus per-item fee at your average ticket, plus monthly fees, plus the reserve's cash-flow cost, plus platform surcharges — not on the headline rate. A 5.5% domestic account with a 5% reserve for 90 days is usually cheaper than a 4.5% offshore account with 10% for 180 days and 2% FX. The peptide merchant accounts page describes the routes these ranges apply to.

Questions

Does KLAUDE charge the merchant for placement?

No. KLAUDE is remunerated by its acquiring and payment partners on placement. The application and the readiness review are free to the merchant.

Can the rolling reserve be avoided?

Not at the start, in this category. It can be reduced or released after a period of clean processing, and it is lower with domestic acquiring than offshore.

Why is my quoted rate higher than the range here?

New merchants, previous terminations, offshore routes and broader catalogues all push pricing up. Narrowing the catalogue and building history are the levers that bring it down.

Are there peptide-specific scheme fees?

Card-brand high-risk registration and monitoring fees apply to the acquirer for the category and are sometimes passed through as a set-up or monthly fee.
